How long does my alarm last?

By: Safety LAB

I often wonder how many times homeowners change their smoke and CO alarms.  When I first moved into my home I know the alarms were original to the house, and the house was built 20 years prior. Even though it appeared the alarms were functioning properly it doesn’t mean the sensor is correctly reading the air.

CO alarms are only good for 5 years, and most CO alarms have a 5 year warranty on them, the reason it is only 5 years is because the sensor can only test the CO levels in air correctly for 5 years.  Smoke alarms can last about twice as long at 10 years.  For the warranty information on your smoke alarm you will need to check the manual because it can differ.  For all First Alert alarms the warranty period starts when you buy the unit. If you are moving into a new home and are curious at when the alarm was installed the best information we can provide you with is the “born on” date on the underside of the alarm, it is the date the alarm was manufactured. If you are ever unsure how old your alarm is, you should always change it out, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
